An original concept and design, this artwork was made for a speculative hyperpop band called “jovjov” with “flowerful” as the album title. This genre is described as “an experimental electronic music movement that pushes mainstream pop to an extreme, exaggerated, and often distorted level“, and as such I wanted to make this a visually maximalist piece, using bright and expressive color as the groundwork for the design.

For this work, much of the process involved physical drawing and found photography that was later manipualted in Photoshop and InDesign. The basis for the artwork included watercolor and colored pencil, which was then brightened and iterated upon in Photoshop. The album font was finalized in InDesign, and the band name is a handwritten font by me that was advanced in InDesign and Photoshop.

Final poster design
Similarly, the poster design went between analogue and digital methods in order to come to a final design that was unique and visually appropriate. The photograph used for the poster came from an iPhone photo of a paint splattered sidewalk in Chinatown. Using this as the grounding imagery for the poster, I used the same font used for the album title for the typography on this page, as it feels very computer generated, which I felt was a great juxtaposition against the textured ground. I further connected the poster design to the album artwork by placing the watercolor flowers onto the poaster.

Overall, this design work is very representative of my process; I love to go from analogue to digital, teetering between technological and handcrafted practices to establish a specific point of view in my work, one that is all my own.
