This spread was created for my internship with Waiting Room Publishing.

For this design, the brief was:

Develop a concept and draft layout for the Gigi article:
Dangerous Women in Ancient Greece and Rome: How They Challenged Power Then, and Why They’d Still Be Considered Dangerous Today.

Issue Theme:
LEGACY – this article should tie into the issue’s exploration of how women’s legacies are shaped, remembered, and reinterpreted.

Design Goals:
Create a bold but elegant visual identity for the piece—celebrating danger, allure, and power.
Balance historical elements with modern resonance (ancient women as archetypes that still unsettle norms about love, money, and influence).
Ensure the design feels timeless but with enough edge to capture readers’ attention in a sophisticated way.

For this spread, the brief was to remain a bit edgy and modern, and establish a powerful tone. This magazine, Gigi, is meant to speak to women 60+, but maintain a cool and contemporary vibe. I chose to use feminine colors, but not those which are overly frilly or “girly”. Here, the deeper purple and red tones maintain a sense of the feminine while also communicating a feeling of power and agency.

I used vector art as a stylistic choice, as a modern reinterpretation of such classical representations such as Greek and Roman art and artifact. This choice, combined with the color palette, maintains an element of modernity, while referencing timeless visuals.
